The problem
It happens in under two seconds, before willpower even gets a vote.
You sit down to do the work that matters. The proposal. The code. The edit you've been circling for a week.
For a few minutes it goes well. Then you hit the hard part: the sentence that won't come, the bug that makes no sense.
And your hand moves.
A new tab. A quick check. You didn't choose it. It just happened, the way you reach for your keys without thinking.
When you surface, forty minutes are gone. The work is exactly where you left it. Now you're tired, a little annoyed, and promising yourself you'll do better after lunch.
You won't. Not because you're lazy. The sites on the other side of that tab are built by thousands of people whose job is to win that two-second moment. You're one person, trying to beat them with willpower, every single day.

The mistake
It put the off switch on the same computer you were trying to focus on.
You've probably tried to fix this already. Most people have.
Screen Time, with its polite little "Ignore limit" button. A browser extension that takes two clicks to turn off. A focus app that stops blocking the moment you close it. Maybe you edited your hosts file, and then remembered how to un-edit it.
They all work fine. Right up until the moment you actually need them.
Because the moment you need a blocker is the exact moment you want out. You're tired, the work is hard, and the escape hatch is right there. Of course you take it. Anyone would.
A lock you can open whenever you want isn't a lock. It's a suggestion.
The fix
Start a session, and it runs to the last second, no matter what you click.
Apollo is built for the version of you at 3pm, not the version of you at 9am.
You pick the apps and sites that steal your day. You set the time. You click start. From that moment, the decision is already made.
Quit Apollo, and the session keeps running. Switch browsers: Chrome, Safari, Arc and Edge are all blocked. Reopen the app you banned, and it closes again.
There's nothing to negotiate with, so you stop negotiating. About ten minutes in, the urge fades. With no way out, your brain stops looking for one and goes back to the work.
That's the whole trick. Not more willpower. Less choice.
